Camera Repair in Cebu

CANON Lenses

I am a Canon user.

Digital SLRs are a fast growing popular gadget here in the Philippines but when after the fun of shooting we sometimes end up with a dislodged lens, broken camera, or a malfunctioning camera software. So where is the camera repair in Cebu. Where is the camera service center center in Cebu?

Canon Service Center

Canon service center is located in The Gallery which is beside the road from Lahug all the way to Mabolo. For those opting to come from SM, you can ride a jeepney 04L which will pass by The Gallery. But if you’re coming from Jones, Mabolo, or the like then you can take the 03Q (which takes about 45 minutes to get to the destination) then an 04L.

I heard that they take longer to repair cameras in Canon so I’d give it about a month. This would be practical if you still have your warranty. However, if you want things fast then you can consider my second option below:

Camera Care: Camera Service Center

Let’s begin with my problem which was my 50mm f/1.8 prime lens got dislodge after my camera took a graceful landing. So nothing was broken but I heard it was more expensive to have the camera lens fixed than to buy a new one. Then my friend thedarklordchucklesthesillypiggy suggested that I have it fixed in Camera Care.

CANON Lenses

Where is Camera Care?

Simple, just tell the taxi driver Sampaguit suites right across Robinsons Mall in Ramos Street.

1200php and 5 hours later my lens is fixed, clean, and with an added contraption to secure the two major parts together.

Canon 7D, You shall be mine

Canon 7D

And Canon 7D was her name..

For already four years I have been using my beloved Canon EOS 400D. I remember the day when my parents bought it for me. I was still in my fourth year of highschool and DSLRs were not very common in school. It was my birthday that day and my mom and I were walking around Ayala to check around for cameras. I have always wanted a nice camera with a proper optical zoom and adjustable settings instead of the usual point and shoot.

I was around Colours checking out some ZSLRs of Olympus which were priced at 24K php. Suddenly mom’s friend, Tito Ronnie Medalle came by and they started talking. To this day I will forever thank tito ronnie for telling my mom “that’s a really good camera for your son”. This was when he was pointing at the nicely displayed Canon 400D still fresh in the market. That had to be the BEST birthday in the duration of my now 19 years of life.

I forever will also love my mom for attending the Canon’s seminar just so that I can get the free extra battery (which I should say has been one of the most useful accessories that came with the camera). And the rest was history with this baby.

Now (which is 4 years later) after 3 sinulogs, 7 countries, hundreds of event, thousands of camwhores, two publications, and minus one focal glass, I fear that my baby is nearing it’s end (in terms of shutter life).

So now I call upon the gods of Photography to please grant your humble subject one BIG BIG BIG wish. Please give me the uber powerful Canon 7D! OH PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! …. Amen.

Why the Canon 7D?

For a long time I’ve always considered the Nikon cameras (the lower models) to be of a more superior auto focus system. But now after seeing the Canon 7D with a double digic processor and the cross sensor type (I’m ranting as if I totally understand these) What I do understand is that these mean you’ve got one fast shooter baby!

Here are the things to drool about the Canon 7D:

  • 18.0 mp
  • HD video
  • 8fps
  • 19 AF points with cross sensor (again that term)
  • 150,00o cycles

I can just imagine the feel of this majestic camera in my hands… Oh I am in love. Here’s a sample video to show you how powerful this baby is.

This film was result of the efforts of :

Bob Nicolas
Bong Sare
Cj Lagman
Ian Cruz
Marvi de Guzman
Jason Magbanua

Great job! I really felt the essence of the film. :)

Domestication of man: Genetic Evolution

The evolution of Man collage

Yesterday there was a talk in UP Lahug on Darwin 2009: the Origin of Species of the 21st Century. The speaker, Dr. Michael D. Purugganan is from the New York University and is doing research in the NYU laboratory. More information of his research can be found here: link. (just search up it in that site, I still have to write about it later)

IMG_ 205

In the first part of his talk he discussed how Charles Darwin was very much interested in the development of species as a result of domestication. He later described domestication as the mutualism or the evolutionary genetic change due to the cultivation of one species to another. This is exemplified in the products of agriculture of today such as Rice. Once it was merely the O. rufunos, now we have the O. sativa.

But this is merely the domestication of one higher species to the lower ones. What if, there was intra-specie domestication. What if man domesticated man himself?

One of the developments of produce of agriculture was the plants lost the ability to shatter and spread their seeds like in the wild thus allowing the farmers to collect their seeds easily.

Now what about humans? Can we raise our own kind so that they do not need to challenge their selves in the pursuit of food, shelter of clothing? Can we spoil man so that he need not use his mind well? Can we spoil our own kind that they will not use their basic functions of survival?

Think of it this way, we raise a race of people (although I strongly think we are developing a new subspecies)  that do not need to think, work, or worry at all. They do not need to strive to survive because everything is provided for them. Once the chicken was a bird capable of true flight. But over the years of domestication, it has lost its ability to fly. If man is raised in an environment where little mental stimulation is present, will man genetically evolve to become dumb?

Some people may think this crazy but that’s the whole concept of adaptation right? When one loses the need for a certain part of himself, then that part becomes under developed or gone right? Such as the case of the chickens and the case of Agricultural plants losing the ability to scatter their seeds freely. Will man come to a point that he needs not think too much to survive?

I can’t help but think that this is but a scary theory of mine that derives it from the development of technology as to ease the life of man. Will there come a time that there will be technology enough to cease all problem of man, all needs of survival and the like? When such time comes  man will no longer need to think as the machines do everything for him.

Some may argue that there are those who are still thinking. These people are those who create, manipulate, and continuously improve technology. I can already picture it out. The human race splitting into two different race: the Producers and the consumers. The thinkers and the slackers. The dominant and the weak.

I know this is a rather twisted concept and some people may strongly disagree with me. But to each his own opinion right? But I can’t help but wonder if those movies about the future, machines controlling everything, or the cultivation of man for their body parts has a large amount of reality to it.

Globe Tattoo Cebu: Staying Connected

Globe Tattoo Cebu

Globe Tattoo Cebu

One of my wishlist objects for 2009 was a mobile broadband. On the night of the Philippine Blog Awards 2009, Globe surprised me by choosing me to be one of the 10 Globe tribal winners of Visayas and therefore fulfilling one of my wishlist: a Globe Tattoo Broadband Kit.

I was delighted to see that Globe Tattoo in Cebu is quite impressive. Falling under HSDPA speed, the internet experience I had with it was indeed satisfactory. But being the Tsinoy that I am, I am very selective on when do I use this mobile broadband. Priced at 5php per minute I find it already worth it. It’s like paying for an internet Cafe without the pain of Viruses, spywares, and a non-personal feel of a computer.

For others who are still new to this Globe Tattoo here are a few things I’ve learned which can help in your internet experience:

  • If you do not wish to pay by the kilobyte then set your GT in TIME mode. Do this by sending TIME to 1111.
  • Set your connection to 3G only. You can do this by going to your Tools, Network, and Network Type.
  • Do not immediately connect. Always check your signal at the lower left portion of the Mobile Broadband window and see if the signal is good. Most desired is the HSDPA. If your signal is merely GPRS then it will be frustrating. EDGE is okay but not as fast HSDPA
  • When already connected always be wary of your time usage. They count by the 15 minute (5php per 15minutes). If you go beyond the 15 minute mark even without using up the whole new 15 minutes they will still charge full. So 5 minutes before the time ends or when you want it to end make sure you closed all your windows or settled all your activities online.
  • As I mentioned above I strongly suggest using per 15 minutes charging than the per kilobyte charging because most of the websites or services online use up a lot of memory.  So I strongly suggest using TIME mode.

The Kit I have is quite a nice design because my netbook, mouse, and external HDD are white so it matches perfectly. But of course there are a variety of Globe Tattoo Broadband New Skins to choose from.

And while you are at it you can check out Globe Tattoo Broadband Gallery for a lot of cool stuff that you can find.

Blogger to WordPress Migration

The much awaited Blogger to WordPress Migration actually happened on an August 1, 2009 at home. So is WordPress better than Blogger? Generally speaking, Yes. But is it in all ways better? No. So which one is better? WordPress or Blogger?

Then and Now

Then and Now

If I were to give out every single detail for the reasons then that is sure to keep you stuck on the computer screen for the couple of hours.

WordPress vs Blogger

So let me just give you a list of why I chose WordPress.

  1. Read more – it is just a click away, with no more headaches of adding codes to your post. In blogger, you still need to add the code to your post and with the additional dilemma if your read more code clashes with your div class code and makes it all messed up.
  2. Blog stats -this is more accurate than the usual Google Analytics because some browsers disable GA.
  3. Picture upload- okay, if you’re not scared of using a lot of memory, then the photo uploading and posting is more convenient than blogger. The flash uploader does work for me in 10 minutes when  I could’ve been spending 2 hours on posting.
  4. Plug ins + widgets – blogger only had widgets, and some of them don’t work as well as we expect them on the page. WP plug ins are the bomb! Working like magic on my blog, I’m lovin it!
  5. Themes – Blogger has  a variety of themes, but they just seem to have a lot of bugs or problems, WP themes are cool, especially the Premium themes.
  6. SEO- I onced asked my friends if WP can SEO better than Blogger, apparently with the SEO plug in and the simplicity of the page makes it all very easy.
  7. Categories + Tags – blogger merely had Labels which got a little too crowded, WP has categories convenient for the reader.
  8. Pages – now this is one feature that Blogger REALLY needs, adding pages in blogger requires that you blog it. WP allows you to creat pages essential such as: About, blogroll, Archives and more.
  9. Sleek look – okay, i’ll admit, the blogger dashboard looks rather… childish, the WP dashboard has a more professional touch to it.
  10. More control -now that I am self hosted, I have more control on my files, codes, pages and more. Unlike Blogger where you had to bear with whatever it had to offer.

Those are just 10 things I like about WP. But do I miss Blogger? At times I do, in fact my Velez Times runs on blogger. So as to say thank you to blogger, here are the things I liked about it:

  1. Edit HTML for Layout- its easy to find, add, and remove codes, if its there, its there.
  2. Layout control -SUPER flexible, this is where WP has not yet ventured to. In WP, you can only add widgets to what is widget ready (unless you’re well versed in codes) while in Blogger, header, footer, sidebars, in between header and body post, You can insert widgets almost everywhere!
  3. Free hosting with domain- no need to self host when you have your own domain.
  4. Less tendency to crash- compared to self hosted sites, you have no fear of crashing if you have 10,000 visitors per day.
  5. Theme collection- okay, so some may have bugs, but the theme library is soooo big, I still wanna play around with blogger cuz of these.

Basically, wordpress is not yet perfect in its own way YET. There are still stuff they need to add like:

  • blog stats -bounce rate scale
  • free hosted with own domain blogs
  • more flexibility in widget control

So in conclusion,

I love WordPress, but that doesn’t mean I’m leaving Blogger for good.

Is WordPress for you?

If you’re after what is free and you have your own domain then the basic Blogger is good. But if you are into serious blogging with lots of memory usage and stuff like that, then get ready to spend a tad bit more when you’re getting into WordPress.

Special thanks to Winston who helped me migrate, host, and buy the domain name of my blog. I learned a great deal of SEO and WordPress tutorials from him. And mind you, my current hosting costs around $250 every two years. And guess what, I got it for free! Thanks Ahia!

Pilipinas, Slow Ba Internet Nyo? Slow Na!

Pilipinas, slow ba internet niyo?! Slow na!

Internet Phail on August 12, 2009

Internet Phail on August 12, 2009

Okay, so the Philippines isn’t very famous for their internet speed. In fact, for some who have gone abroad they all gush saying:

“It was internet Haven!”

“YouTube loads so fast!”

“The pages load so fast, I don’t even click them anymore!”

(okay so there may be something wrong with the last one)

So why is our internet slow today?

Here’s a very reliable source:

According to them the cause of  slow internet speed:

1.Philippines and Singapore affected.
2.There is still internet, but slower connection
3.Problem is due to disruption in the underwater cables
4.The problem will be solved in around 24 hours, so it MIGHT be okay around Aug. 13

So conclusion, what can you do?

-Plurk
-Twitter
-Chat (but for YM, file sharing is a bit of a prob)

For a country that is strongly dependent on Internet, this is something quite alarming.
Hope our connection returns back to normal… which in other nations would be considered.. well abnormally slow.
