UP Cebu: Native Species Reforestation Seminar

Last July 15, 2010 (yes this is a late post) I had the rare opportunity to join an informational seminar on Native Species Reforestation.

Because the day before was a storm, the whole connection from Manila to Cebu did not work. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that this is a simultaneous webcast with Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Hi-tech yes? (Nag level up na ta!)

Since the connection was poor we had to stop it altogether and fortunately Sir Joel Lee decided to stand up and say a few things about what we could do instead.

He mentioned that gathered in that one room/hall were people from different environmental organizations concerned about the native species and ecology of Cebu. So we had a discussion:

The Discussion Board

After which we were able to divide into groups to discuss many concerns.

Some of the major questions asked were:

  1. How to protect the native species?
  2. Which native species need to be planted?
  3. What species SHOULDN’T be planted?
  4. What are our sources of water?
  5. How do we REALLY protect our protected zones?
  6. How do we prevent further deforestation and species hunting?

These are but some of the major concerns of the groups. Again I personally find it embarrassing that we Cebuannos are not so aware of our rich natural resources in the forests and further more we are the ones destroying our beautiful forests.

Here’s a quick trivia:

1.Cebu Flowerpecker is one of the world’s rarest bird found in, yep, you guessed it CEBU!

2.The Cebu Cinammon Tree is one of the world’s rarest trees, and also in, of course, CEBU!

So this is basically a call to everyone to become more aware of the species surrounding them.

So what CAN you do?

  1. stop buying illegally sold animals (especially those local animals)
  2. spread the word about our forests
  3. research a little about what we have left (tabunan, cantipla, sudlon)
  4. throw your garbage properly (yes this goes a long way to helping our environment)
  5. Conserve water (we’re gonna run dry someday if you don’t)

All these can in one way or another help the environment so please spread the word and help save what we have left!

(though I’m guessing this will most likely fall on deaf ears. sigh)
