A wonderful Horse by Cebu Homecraft greeted me at the entrance of the Expo
Just recently my mom and dad wanted to check out the awesome One Cebu Expo 2010 in CICC Mandaue.
I was able to hear about this previously and I guess curiosity got the better of me so I decided to tag along too. Well I should say I wasn’t at all disappointed with paying the One Cebu expo 2010 a visit.
The One Cebu expo 2010 is just in Mandaue CICC and will continue to be there until August 16 (I think). There are a lot of things to see and appreciate there and I dare say it was worth my while to observe the different displays in there.
(pardon the poor quality photos, wasn’t able to bring my weapon of mass destruction with me)
There was however, one slight problem. The first stall which I saw when I went in there had some small display so I did what I, a Photoblogger, would normally do, I took a shot then the woman in charge told me not to take pictures. Well I was shocked and told her in a friendly tone, “Dapat naglagay kayo ng sign.” This was very disappointing because I’m used to following rules when there are signs like ‘no photography’ or ‘pls. no taking of pictures’ but this stall had no sign to show. COME ON! Even the other stalls had cute hand-written notes that ward off myopic photobloggers like me. I won’t name drop the company but I gave out a clue of who they may be in the first part. The only way to find out is to go there so all the more reason to check out the One Cebu Expo 2010 diba?
Anyway, let’s move on to the better part of the expo.

Achi choosing from the selection of Scrubs
My Sister was amused by a certain stall which was named as Scrub Shop. Scrub is a shop that sells, you guessed it, scrubs. But they don’t sell just any plain old scrub but scrubs with awesome designs like Addiddas, army camouflage and plenty other designs you can choose from. They actually have a stall in Parkmall. One pair can cost around 450php and my sister was a happy shopper right after her purchase.

Lots of Jewelries around us
The place was packed with people and there were a lot of choices to choose from. I even heard that the day before, which was the launching, prominent people such as Imelda Marcos, Bong Revillia, and Loren came to see what’s in here. I guess people do have reason to come here because the merchandise can range from small affordable stuff to huge stuff which I know I’ll never be able to afford even if I sacrifice my college life allowance. Then again you don’t really need to purchase anything. This is an opportunity to see whatever possible hidden Jewels (literally) Cebu can offer to you. Apart from Jewelry you can also purchase clothes, bags and other accessories.

Puso: Cebu's Hanging rice

Gracie Q Creative Designs
If you’re interested as I was at the photo with the colorful hanging rice (puso) then you’d be interested with Gracie Q Creative Designs. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to ask for a calling card because they ran out of it however I was able to ask about their prices. They also have bracelets and keychains ranging from 50-70php. These trinkets would make nice gifts to friends or souvenirs to friends from abroad. Do visit their stall as they also have customization available for those who want to customize their own design. Thanks to the nice lady who allowed me to take pictures of their awesome products!

Weave Got It! - Awesome company with awesome products!
If you look at that photo and said, “wow” then you got that same feeling when I saw their booth. The nice ladies watching out for the stall allowed me to take a snap at their beautiful display. Now here’s one of those times when I enjoy the nature of the company names in Cebu. They do have the paronomasia intended when they named themselves as “WEAVE GOT IT”.
Cute name, cool designs = for the win
Contact Grace at 516-2061 for more information.

italkkarat18 - Jewelry, Gifts and Home accents
And we have here another company made of win: the italkkarat18. The nice lady in charge allowed me to take a general bird’s eye view-shot of the set up. They had an awesome display of jewelries, figurines, and things which can beautify your home. Do check their booth to see more the awesomeness you can see in this photo. I like the booth set up too
Brightly lit and attractive.
You may contact them via Niecy Namalata at 340-0581 and they also have a website: http://www.italkkarat18.com

Mendco
There on top you can see my father sitting on the furniture of one of Cebu’s Best Furniture companies: Mendco. They pride over their beautiful exports with quality wood and design. Though I don’t know much about interior design but as a person who likes to observe detail, this company can make me go WOW. I like their booth too.
Very brightly lit.

Achi on Mendco furniture
One can’t deny the beauty and the majestic feel of the furnitures in Mendco. Don’t believe me? Well go to the expo and see for yourself. Who knows, you might even end up buying their awesome creations!
And to wrap up the whole experience I got a picture with the awesome horse sculpture at the entrance.

I’m just curious how the horse was able to carry its weigh with only its legs to support it. nice sad sya.

Gracie Q is (or was) actually the business of my kabarkada’s sister and her friends. my kabarkada sells some of their stuff in their local gift shop back in Negros Oriental and I have always been amused by the puso designs. they even sell necklaces with that as a pendant

Ahh well, people pay huge money for product shots and some of these people are afraid that someone might flick their designs online.
I’ll never understand the no photo rule.
Well they’re scared that someone might imitate their products (and ironically they post photos with good quality in their website) LOL!
van, gracie q actually has a website and you can contact them thru it: http://www.gracieq.com/

Hi, I was just browsing and read your comments about the puso and GracieQ. It is my sisters company and they actually design and build their products in Don Bosco campus in Pleasant Homes utilizing the out-of-school youths as a means for these kids to gain livelihood. A cool idea actually. Yes, they have their own website and should be able to address all your needs on fashion accessories.
Good Luck!

Share to you the Story of our PUSO
PUSO: The heart of Cebuano’s culture and living
Cebuanos are eternal survivors. At the height of World War II, they carried rice grains with them to the mountains as they fled from enemy attacks. With no kettle, pot, or any cooking elements, they boiled their rice in bamboo shoots. They found this limiting, because they couldn’t bring the cooked rice anywhere, particularly when they needed to go to safer hideouts.
And so Cebuanos invented PUSO.
They found how to weave yellow palm leaves made into fist-sized pouch where grains of rice are placed and brought to boil. As the grains were cooked, the pouch was called puso and became known as the “hanging rice”, for they were often seen to be carried along, dangling from the hands or “hanging” from a bamboo stand.
Today, it is commonly found on food streets and often available as mobile meal in a packed lunch style that comes along with any selection of stews or barbecues. It is one of the best local foods in Cebu.
Puso or hanging rice is made by the majority of poor Cebuanos as their means of livelihood to support their families on a daily basis. When you visit Pasil, a fishing port and a depressed area located at the heart of the city, you can observe a lot of households weaving these palm leaves into pouches and putting grains onto them all throughout the day. And as early as 4 o’clock in the afternoon, they would start boiling them in tin barrels with brimful of water. After which, puso are delivered fresh and piping hot to food stalls strung along the streets, welcoming all weary workers to partake them for a sumptuous dinner together with barbecue and other grilled foods.
Over many years, puso become not only a precious part of the culture of the Cebuanos but also become an important part of life and living.
Marginalized youth from Gracieq Creative Designs Company have revived and relived this traditional culture by designing products that provide their generation a fashion sense that truly identify them as Cebuanos. Made out of scrap plastic furniture fiber, these young people transformed scrap materials and made them into fashionable accessories. The uniquely developed designs of “Puso” can now compliment one’s fashion accents in necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets and key chains.
Behind each product designs has its own story to tell. It speaks more than its artistic craftsmanship because they are expressions of hope for those who barely have any life. When you own any “puso” designed products and make it as part of your fashion accents, you are giving them hope to live better lives. It’s a fashion sense that carries a worthy cause.
