Bloggers in AICA Cooking Party: Thank you achi meyan for the pic :D

Yesterday, an exclusive 10 lucky bloggers were given the opportunity to have a cooking party in AICA or Academy for International Culinary Arts in The Gallery, Mabolo. Chef Johann Young is to be thanked for this wonderful opportunity! My experience here made me want to say this is the Best Cooking School in Cebu!

We started the cooking party by having some clips shown to us by Chef Nikko Mabugat. Then we were introduced to Chef Joe Mike Lontoc and Chef Marleen Ong. Their background and experience gave us all a view of how competent our teachers are.

Chef Joe Mike

After we had our little introduction they brought us to the main kitchen where we were divided into two groups. The first group was going to do the Quesadillas. This happened to be one of my favorites so I decided to join this group. My mom on the other hand decided to go to the other group where Chef Marleen was, because they were going to make Churos with the delicious chocolate dip. (note: this is the first time mom ever accompanied me to a blogging event)

The Quesadillas students

The kitchen was somewhat like a surgery room. We were provided with cool aprons and then we had to wash our hands real well. They used paper towels to avoid transferring of bacteria in the usual towels. Then we were provided with a chopping board, a knife and some vegetables.

Chef Joe Mike giving the initial instructions for chopping

One of the things I learned was how to chop vegetables. Apparently you need to make your guiding hand in the form of a claw then chop your way through the vegetables so that you won’t cut your fingers in the process.

Chef Joe Mike demonstrating the chopping process

The smell of the different vegetables coming together was just heavenly! And I have to say it wasn’t just the smell, it also had to do with the color. Such wonderful colors coming together in one bowl.

Chef Joe Mike doing a chopping demonstration of another vegetable

I realized that there were so many ways to cut vegetables. And boy was it no easy job. They even had cutting measurements written on the white board! Fortunately we didn’t have to follow it. While chopping away I decided to take a peek in the other kitchen where my mom, Vernon, and Novell were.

And so after all those chopping and chopping and chopping, we were able to come up with the salsa!

My colorful salsa :D

Then again we should not forget the lovely Chef Nikko who did the cooking of the actual Quesadilla (but Chef Joe Mike did the meat of the Quesadilla). She entertained us all with her wit and her tales from the kitchen. She’s had her share of battle scars.

Chef Nikko Checking the pan if it's hot enough

We also learned some cool new things like when you’re holding a hot pan you have to shout “Hot hot! Behind you!”. But AICA did not want us to eat just Quesadillas and Churos. Chef Joe Mike prepared us a delicious Main courser  which still was of a Mexican theme.

Chef Joe Mike working his magic

The smell was driving everyone crazy. If we were not blessed with the gift of reason we would have pushed each other away and devoured the delicious food still cooking on the pan.

Team Quesadillas!

The food that blew us away

All our hard work paid off as we all gathered our salsas together in one place and voila! We have the variety of salsas according to how we want it to be.

Salsa Variety

Then we all proceeded upstairs to have wonderful Mexican Fiesta!!! There was more food than expected. In fact, we couldn’t finish it all. There were Churos everywhere! If I weighed at least 50% lesser than what my current weight is than I would’ve devoured all Churos in sight.

Churos with chocolate dip

And don’t forget the delicious Mexican Surprise by Chef Joe Mike:

The Mexican Rice was delicious!

And thus the feast begun. You would know if the food is really good if the people eating it are all smiles. And yes you can definitely see it in their hungry faces.

The Hunrgy Bloggers nomnoming away

In the beginning of the class we were told that if we behaved then we will have a special Margarita drink from Chef Nikko herself.

Conclusion:

This is by far the BEST FOOD EVENT I’ve ever attended. The school is definitely a unique one. Normally you would have the idea of a cooking class where there’s a cooking teacher with some few ingredients to cook some home made dishes.

This one however, is what you can say “is just like in TV!”. You’ve got Chefs, like REAL chefs with actual experiences. You’ve got a cool Large Screen TV for class. You’ve got two cool kitchens with quality materials for cooking. The whole place is complete! The place is sparkling clean!

The teachers are wonderful. If you don’t know anything they won’t think you’re ignorant. As what Chef Nikko said, “I’m favorite student at the start is the one who knows ‘zero’, absolutely nothing!”

AICA just opened up last March 16, 2010 and enrollment is currently ongoing. They have 5 month courses and 12 month courses and they also have 16 sessions for Fundamentals.

Why do you need to go abroad to learn from the best when the best is right here in Cebu and right now.

Cebu Blog Camp 2010: Photoblogger’s First

Cebu Blog Camp 2010 Attendees :D

Brief History

Once upon a time my best friend and I decided to create an event that would hopefully gather all bloggers, especially those we have never seen before, in one roof. When initially we planned to have it as the first ever Visayas Bloggers Summit, we couldn’t push through with it because VBS was to be held in Iloilo later this year.

Feeling ambitious I insisted that something must happen this year so Ahia Winst told me to form a team here and he’ll make it happen. And so I gathered 8 of the most influential Cebu Bloggers and formed the Cebu Blog Camp team which was  headed by me and Ahia Winst.

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, the support of the team and volunteers, and of course our speakers and attendees, Cebu Blog Camp 2010 made history on May 22, 2010.

The Cebu Blog Camp is under the non-profit organization: Blog and Soul Movement Cebu Chapter.

Cebu Blog Camp 2010

The day before Winst had to arrive early so we could make all the necessary preparations for the actual day. The place was set up and I was already feeling very nervous trying to make sure everything was going to turn out okay.

The Auditorium all ready for the campers

On the big day itself I was very happy to see all the things set up and I especially was impressed with our wonderful photowall. (designed by our own Miong and Prince) Prince did some camwhoring shots, and so did Ahia Winst.

The Cebu Blog Camp started out with an activity where the different bloggers where grouped according to their colors and then they had a costume designing contest all out of newspapers. I couldn’t take much shots but those were some fashionable costumes. I remember seeing Mica in a lovely mickey mouse dress. There was even one from the Purple team: A Lady Gaga lookalike. The winners won some awesome prizes and the two models who won got Pinoy Blogger Shirts. Did I mention that the whole day was filled with cool freebies and prizes? (for those who did not go you must definitely sign up for next year!)

Then we had our first speaker: the Google Country Consultant Mrs. Aileen Apolo-de Jesus. She flew all the way from Manila along with her family to talk about Blogging with Blogger and AdSense. I unfortunately couldn’t stay to listen to this really really interesting topic from only Filipino who works for Google.  I had to rush to school to take an exam then rush back just in time for Micamyx to talk about Blogging 101.

The de Jesus Family: Miguel, Aileen, and Jay

I once heard Mica in my first time to go to iBlog, there I learned from her some basics in blogging. This time I was gonna expect the same thing but she surprised me when she decided to make it even more personal and interesting. She started the talk by talking to attendees and hearing their blogging story.

Mica interviewing Sinjin

This of course made the attendees sort of loosen up so that they could feel free to interact. Then she started talking about the things to do when blogging. She also threw in some advice on how to meet other bloggers and go to blogging events. She also mentioned that she has been coming to Cebu often to meet her blogger friends in Cebu and included in her statement that she enjoys the company of Cebuanno bloggers. (dahil maraming gwapo daw) After her talk I believe Mica now has a growing fan club here in Cebu. (which I am also part of :P )

"Go out and make friends with fellow Cebuanno Bloggers"

During the talk I decided to shoot some of the familiar faces around the hall, and some of these are even bloggers I only know online.

Robstroy and Atty. Magman

Cattski and Hendri Go

After which was my turn to talk. It was officially my first time to talk about Photoblogging in the public. I was really nervous when talking because I wasn’t sure what level of photography the people would want to know about. There wasn’t much time to go into detail so I just generalized everything.

Then we had a wonderful talk from the Influential Blogger herself: Mrs. Janette Toral (writer of Blogging from home) I was going around taking shots of people while listening to Tita Janette’s talk but I came to a halt when I had to listen very closely to her level of bloggers from that Tribe Book. She really opened our eyes when she mentioned about “Some bloggers remain stuck in the third level which is ‘I’m great’” and this is really happening around us.

The Attendees during the last speaker's talk

We also had an interesting talk about Mobile Blogging which a lot of serious bloggers could learn about. Lunch break came and boy was I relieved that the food was more than enough for everyone.

Some people decided to go camwhoring during their free time:

Cebu Bloggers Society President: Vernon Go

Atty. Ouano trying out the Lapu Laptop

Bloggers from Mindanao :D

Koya Drew trying out the Lapu Laptop

We had the rest of the speakers such as Tonyo Cruz , who did a wonderful job talking about Citizen Journalism. We also had Ria Jose who talked about Blogging Communities (she had a very thought provoking talk which deserves a dedicated blogpost.) Who could forget the likes of Brad Geisser who talked about how to market your blog and also how to handle PR people. His talk was one of the most outstanding as many people repeatedly quoted him in Twitter and Plurk.

Tonyo Cruz in Citizen Journalism

We also had the Business Guru of Cebu: Mr. Wilson Ng talk about Branding your Blogs, making a personal brand. Then there was Juned Sonido who talked about some serious issues in Blogging Ethics. Here’s another first as it was my first time to meet one of my blogging idols: Jayvee Fernandez. The guy amazed the campers with his awesome videos in diving and adventures. Basically Kuya Jayvee reminded everyone that Niche is good for earning money, but if you look deeper, blogging is an art and it’s all about expressing: YOU.

Business Guru: Wilson Ng

Diving Master: Jayvee Fernandez

The last speaker was one that a good number of people have been waiting for.  Hans Koch talked about SEO and the fundamentals.

After all the speakers were done the fun was not yet over. We still had a box of goodies and 2 phones were to be raffled out by Nokia. Prince Ryan Gilig won the first N series phone and someone won the e75 (me jely!!!)  Who knows the name of the blogger who one? I still need to link him on this post.

Most of the bloggers were able to win shirts, comics, DVDs, CDs and other cool freebies.

See you all next year for the Cebu Blog Camp 2011!!

Pacific Swallow (Hirundo tahitica)

Pacific Swallow (Hirundo tahitica)

Let’s  take a quick break from my travels. I miss posting about Birds of Cebu. This particular bird of Cebu is the Pacific Swallow (Hirundo tahitica). The Pacific Swallow is a beautiful bird common around the Philippines and can be seen gliding around the skies or even just resting on an electric wire.

The Pacific Swallow is a small bird about 6 inches tall. Like the other swallows it spends most of its life in the air so shooting this bird with my 90-300mm non IS f/4.5-6.6 was really difficult until it decided to rest on one of the wires.

Pacific Swallow (Hirundo tahitica) picture

The Pacific Swallow is often mistaken for the Striated Swallow which has similar features with the Pacific Swallow. They are differentiated by the prominent red mark on the crown and nape of the Pacific Swallow. The striated swallow also has more prominent striations on the breast.

Remember when shooting these birds it is recommended to use a tripod. Less movement is required as they are quick to fly away when threatened. Recommended shooting time is around 4pm because the birds are resting on the wires during these times. They are commonly seen in fruit bearing trees especially Mango (Mangifera indica) trees.

Music 21 at Makati with the Nyoks

Music 21 Sign

Music 21 Family KTV

Right after our delightful dinner in  Mang Inasal the gang decided to head on to Music 21 in Makati where we could express our inner emotions to some beautiful music (but when they started singing I knew a big mistake and now we’ve contributed to noise pollution in Manila). Unfortunately Billycoy could not join us for our shrieking singing session because he lived so far away.

Nyok nyok Group picture

We got the barkada package in Music 21 which was around 3K php. With it we had at least 3 hours, 3 pitchers of cocktail, 2 plates of Pica-pica food. I have to say it was totally worth it. There was something about stuffing ourselves in small black room with loud music that makes it so enjoyable.

Cai Giving it her best

Cai was obviously giving it her best as I know her emotions were oozing that night. I sense a love story coming up soon.

Single Ladies

Warning:

This place is definitely not for Claustrophobic, pregnant, sick persons or for persons who have a high tendency to have a heart attack or epileptic shocks (the blinking lights are sure to give you one).

Shout-out:

Dear Ada and Jeh jeh. Where are you guys? We weren’t able to hang out that night T__T oh well, I’m sure there’s always a next time. I miss you nyoks!!!!

Mang Inasal Meal

This is a continuation to my summer weekend in Manila. Maki, Mica, Kuya Erik, Ahia Rell, Billycoy and some random Photoblogger.  We ordered the Mang Inasal chicken meal with the Rice wrapped in a Banana Leaf. The chicken is actually not bad (and not pricy). Paired with the eat all you can rice, I was ready to kiss my diet goodbye.

The meal starts out with a hot sour soup to spark up our appetite. Then we devoured our chickens as if we’ve never eaten anything for the past three weeks. (okay so maybe I’ve beein in a diet for far too long). Maki suggested the chicken Oil which we add to the rice. I repeat, CHICKEN O.I.L. as in Over-Ingestion of Lipids. Oh well, it only happens once in a long time diba?

Thanks again to the Patay Gutom Nyok-nyok gang for the wonderful dinner night.

The karaoke session deserves a separate post.

(In my entire duration of stay in Manila, this was the only time I uesd my Tripod *phail*)

Photoblogger Experiences Tech Tanod

Tech Tanods Group Picture

After the first half of iBlog 6 in UP-Diliman I just had to grab the opportunity to join the Tech Tanods in ADMU. Tech Tanod is actually focused on teaching a class on the how-to’s in blogging in the hopes of bringing this knowledge to a new level such as making blogging as a career or even just starting his personal website.

Before we headed over to ADMU we dropped by Kebab Corner for lunch.

The food was kinda okay but I found it too ordinary but as what Ate Karla said, if you’re Yogurt lover then the place will fascinate you. I did enjoy the Huge fan in the restaurant that had water secretions to cool the customer and I finally met THE Marocharim. (gosh his skin is so white, next time I meet him I must ask him what’s his secret)

After we ate we met Yoshke somewhere so that we could pick up the projector for the Tech Tanod session. It was also during that time that we felt like we needed to kidnap someone. So we kidnapped Yoshke and dragged him all the way to ADMU for the session.

Looking down (literally) after being kidnapped

Billycoy, ever heard of the upper lip and lower lip? He invented the third

And more Billycoy images to entertain his fans.

After the ride in the Junedmobile we entered the room for the session and there I met one of my idol Vloggers, Coy Caballes. Apparently blogging Mentor Winston and vlogging Idol Coy were going to be speakers for that day’s session. Winston spoke about making money online (there was something weird about hearing him discuss a certain topic completely in Filipino, it was something like a cross between Filipino, Economics, and Computer class) Then we heard from Coy. Though no matter how simple Coy’s vlogging techniques were, we still learned a lot from him especially the myths about Vlogging.

After the session we knew the whole Tech Tanod experience is not complete unless we have the MOST IMPORTANT part… camwhoring 101.

We tried to go back to UP-Diliman for the group shot for iBlog 6 but we were too late. Just when we thought the camwhoring was over, the Photobloggers brought out their tools. Here you can see Juned shooting with his tool.  Winston also takes out his monster with a 35mm f/1.8 to show of to the gang.

Maki and Winston

We also had the wonderful opportunity to meet up with Mak mak and Mic Mic. Unfortunately the pictures of Mica were taken with Maki’s Heavenly 7D (someday ako rin).  To the folks at Tech Tanod thanks for the wonderful opportunity.
