Pitta Erythrogaster (Philippine Red Bellied Pitta)
The Philippine Red Bellied Pitta, falls on my collection of Wild Philippine Birds that crash into our window.
Now we do not intend for these local or endemic species found in the Philippines to come crashing into our humble home. But since they do crash then it is incidental that I get to take these pictures.
Cebu is home to a good number of Local Endemic Wildlife or Birds in the Philippines. I could even go as bold as to say that the diversity here is 10 times that of the Galapagos Island (you can correct me if I am wrong, just give me sources indicating so. Thank you) Such beautiful diversity and rarity in our local fauna gave me the chance to photograph this cute lil thing.
Here’s so far what I know about Pittas. You can clearly indicate it is a Pitta at one look because of it short appearance but with long legs for scratching around the ground, oval shaped body, medium sized beak built for foraging amongst the forest for food, and in the case of this Pitta, a very Red Belly.
The scientific name is derived from the word Erythro which means red and the Greek word gaster which means belly. So as indicated, the Philippine Red Bellied Pitta is very well known for their red bellies.
These birds are ground birds and are therefore very difficult to photograph. I was very fortunate to have encountered this bird firsthand.
After I took the shot I released it back into the wild.
What a wonderful opportunity it truly was for me. It turns out after all, I don’t need to sell my house to get some lenses and photograph beautiful birds. God decided to bring the birds to me.

Hello Joey,
Are you in Cebu? If so I suggest bringing it to Crocolandia in Talisay. How is it now?
I am in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. It is in good condition, it was caught only this morning.
