Sorry for the late post. School finally got me.
Anyway, we, the Cebu Bloggers Society, were able to meet Sen. Mar Roxas and talk to him in an “informal” talk about some issues.
I’d like to start of by mentioning that I am someone who does not want to meddle with politics. Politics is one of the topics that I’m not really interested in, but I am for what is right.
Mar Roxas surprised me by suddenly going in the group picture and sat beside some of us. Then he even surprised me more, when he suddenly sat in our area instead of his assigned area. This guy surely knows to show what his audience wants to see. But Mar had more to show than just that little surprises.
The Talk
Some of the questions involved topics such as his popularity, Hayden scandal, and his and Korina’s Pamanhikan. Honestly, I wasn’t really interested hearing about these things from him. I mean come on!!! They’re everywhere in Television, gossips and the like. Don’t you get bored with it? (I sound so mean here, pardon me)
But later on some topics started to get more interesting. One of the questions was raised by my fellow CBS member, Guada. It involved Mar’s thoughts on Cebu being united when it comes to voting and him being popular amongst Cebuanos. He answered by talking about his achievements in the BPO industry and joked, “All the Cebu Bloggers are for Mar Roxas.“
He ended his answer by saying that the Mar Roxas they voted for back then is the Mar Roxas that hopefully they’ll vote in 2010.
Now I know its nice that he did all those great things for the BPO industry and I understand it did good for a lot of Juans out there who needed decent paying jobs.. BUT. I also believe that that wasn’t the answer Guada wasn’t looking for. I think that the fact that Cebu is united in votes and Mar is top on their polls, it only shows that Mar should be confident or grateful. Oh well, we all have our thoughts and he has his.
Aside from that, to be quite honest, its only during that meet up that I found out that Mar is actually the Father of the BPO industry, congrats to Mar!!! I’ve seen a lot of people succesful and financially stable because of their jobs in the call centers. However, I regret not being able to ask him questions regarding the growing reality of backshoring in the IT industry. Yep, thats true. Some IT companies are going back to where they orginally were or are closing completely. I wanted to ask Mar his solution for this but time did not permit.
But one of the highlights of this “informal” meet up was the questions asked by our very own Jobette. Honestly Jobette’s questions were very informative. “The people in the academe are pushing for grade 7 and 5th high school, what is your opinion about this?”
Mar answers that he is indeed in favor for the addition of one year of educational system in the Philippines. At this point, my mind was already starting to question this.
-What about the parents? Wouldn’t they have to spend more?
-How are we going to cover the expenses for such a trainsition? More taxes?
-Is our educational system really that incompetent? How many stories have we heard of straight A students from abroad becoming only average students in the midst of schools in the Philippines?
-Do you really think 1 year can make a difference in improving the education?
-How about those people who didn’t have grade seven education? Are they incompetent? Are you incompetent? Am I incompetent?
My thoughts on this matter…
We the Filipinos have long been having the standard 6 years in grade school and 4 years in High school. Personally, I can say the education I had during those ten years was more than enough. I do not think any incompetence in a student is due to the lack of years in school. If a student slack off during his first 6 years of grade school, do you think he won’t slack off again if you add one more year? I don’t think adding one more year is the solution. The solution is more on finding how to improve the attitudes of the students. You can waste all the tax money of the people and make the parents slave even more to pay for one more year of tuition, but it wont improve the student’s behavior by adding one year.
