Photographer’s Guide to Sinulog

January 11th, 2009

First of all this is not the OFFICIAL GUIDE. This is merely the words of an amateur photographer (me) who has experienced the treachery of Sinulog 2008. (but I enjoyed it anyway)

So let’s start with a check list with what to bring:
Essentials
1.Your camera (duh!!!!!)
2.Extra Batteries
3.Extra Memory Cards-best shoot at your largest format
4.Tripod/Monopod-well, if you’re up for some difficult shots then this proves useful
5.External HD or mini Laptop- nowadays, there are some pretty impressive notebooks with small sizes, but great capacities
6.Sturdy bag with good security-you would want a bag open to all kinds of bumping and of course secure enough from “idle Hands” of the streets
7.Cloth- at least 3 sheets, can be towels or handkerchiefs, I personally use Neckerchiefs from High School. Proved useful when rain poured
8.Big Clear Plastic-When Rain gets worst, you’ll need this
9.Umbrella-a small one if possible, just to keep your stuff from getting wet when rain is heavy
10.Cap/Hat- to protect you from unbearable heat
11.Cellphone- to contact people for updates of wherever they are, proved useful when asking about the potential contingents
12.Cash- 500php at minimum

extra stuff
1.Mirror, I saw someone bringing a mirror, must be for reflecting light
2.Portable Ladder-hahaha this one was cool for Bird’s Eye View

Photographing Tips:
1.Lighting
-You can see that the direction of the sun varies in most times. Meaning, you have to know where the sun rises and where sun sets in your area of shoot. The festival is a whole day shoot, so you should be flexible. In Cebu, weather is crazy, and I have lost pag-asa(hope) in PAGASA (weather people). So, you never know when it turns cloudy and then sunny. For this case, I strongly suggest using M or Shutter Priority for your shoot.

2.Festival Queens
-although part of the rules in Street Dancing Category is not to shoot the FQ’s alone, we still want to get those shots. Now during the dance, it is a big tendencies for the FQ’s to keep moving their heads sidewards and a lot of times, blocking their faces with the Sto. Niño. So what should you do? Here’s a tip, these FQ’s love attention, so get up close with them and talk to them indirectly. They will willingly look at your camera and smile. Especially if you smile at them. (wink wink)

3.Dancers
-it is great to shoot dancers during their dance. But I also notice everyone is in a hurry to shoot as soon as a contingent arrives. It is very useful if you take time to observe their dances from afar. So when they do arrive in your area, you already know where to locate yourself when shooting. You don’t have to keep guessing their next move. In fact, you won’t worried of getting hit by one of the dancers. I remember being able to shoot the dancers while I was in the Heart of the dancing.

4.Sidelights
-only one advice, be prepared. Sidelights has to be one of those moments you MUST capture. So just be observant of whatever might happen

5.Higantes(Giants) and Floats
-I’m a sucker at this point but I did realize that at a certain angle you can emphasize some characteristics of the subjects. But I believe its just getting at the right angle.

Anyway, one of the most important things to remember in this shoot is that you MUST GET AN ID. If you are just there at the sides, you won’t get much. You will spend the rest of the day cramming around with thousands of other people. Getting an ID entitles you to shoot IN the parade. It also allows you to talk to the dancers while in their break, so you can get them to pose.

It also helpful if you do the shoot within the judging areas. Look around. You’ll be able to see signs saying if the area is a judging area or not.

And lastly… what to wear:
1.Hat/Cap
-anything that protects your head at the same time does not bother you when taking pictures

2.Black Shirt
-hahahaha. Okay, maybe under the heat of the sun, White is the best color. But every year in Sinulog, majority of the people where black, so let’s go with the flow.

3.Scarf
-not to keep you warm but to protect your cam from direct sunlight or rain.

4.pants/shorts
-any would do, last year I wore pants and it didn’t matter, as long as its comfortable enough to make you move around and position yourself in different angles.

5.Shoes
-yep, shoes which are water proof, or anything closed. wearing slippers or sandals… not a good idea with all that dirt, dust and things you could think up of. Also, you don’t want to get stepped on a lot. Trust me. Getting through an excited crowd, is a foot-stomping buffet.

here’s a little preview of what you should wear, although incomplete, but just to get you the idea.

take note- I wore my cellphone on a strap, helpful when I don’t want to keep reaching into my pocket

Sinulog Kabataan 2009

January 11th, 2009

One of the requirements for our PE is to watch the Sinulog Kabataan. So rushing from Busay, I run over to Abellana, purchase the 30 php ticket, which I find totally worth it. And then I seat myself in the upper left portion equipped with my AHD 300 on my tripod and my EOS 400D using 90-300mm USM lens.

I was there for about an hour and a half until the program started. When it did start I was impressed. Although the Doxology singer lacked a partner for the voicing in “The Prayer” her excellent vibratto and belting voice, and also lacked instrumentals. The march of the Philippine Flags was also a sight to behold especially when the wind blew the right direction.

The primary level featured 9 contingents while the secondary, I forgot since I didn’t stay for the last few contingents.

Here were a few things I noticed about the whole set up.

1.With a telephoto lens, shooting is great from a high angle.
2. I need a higher Tripod when shooting with my AHD 300
3.My AHD 300 did a great job shooting a video, especially since AHD 300 is only 9995 php. HD quality
4.Vendors are very irritating when shooting! They pass by when the video is on going. And they carry their merchandise real high so they get included in the video!
5.Someone considered the lighting for the activity because the stage was strategically located where the light was best shown on the dancers.
6.It is best to come early so you can test shot some things.
7.DO NOT change lens in between dances. Do it at home.
8.It is extremely tiring to shoot at the same time observe my HD cam for any lighting changes.
9.Suggested exposure for Video Settings: +1 at 30fps, and exposure can change at a mere shift of camera’s angle (for HD cam)
10.It is difficult for HD cams to have controlled exposure because you can only change your exposure before the shoot.
11.My AHD 300 cannot cope up with loud noises, any suggestion to mute it?

Here are some Picture samples of the event. Videos to follow after.

This started out as something my friends wanted to do for fun. But then I realized. It actually meant a lot more. To start with, don’t ask me where they found that rope for suicide, I don’t know where we can get one, period. Next, no, Velezians (Students from Velez College) are not pressured to commit suicide just because of exams. (Although suicide seems very tempting) And lastly, no one was hurt in the making of this picture.. (or at least no one was hurt severely)

The title up there is a contradictory statement to the marriage line: ’till death do us part’. This symbolizes the strong unending friendship that knows no bounds so that not even death can separate them. Some people would like to compare this kind of love or friendship to the relationship with their family, or their friends, or even relationship with God.

I personally, would like to thank a dear friend of mine, Ahia Rupert, who I consider as my brother, but sometimes were my twin brother, for encouraging me in my works in photography. He has been a great example to me and a role Model (Idol nako ni siya!) . And of course a new found friend.

There you have it guys, my Top Ten sets of Vanjhnn Photography. THE GENESIS.

Happy New Year All!

This is obviously a result of Fruh Fruh’s desire to do an Emo shoot of Jonathan. So we met in Starbucks with Fruh Fruh carrying her black make up and all. Then I did this shot. Jonathan expressing his anger for the forced make-up.

I believe that people can be better understood not only in their actions, but also in their eyes. Take a good look at a person’s eyes, and try to feel them become your own. Feel the way they move, the way they dilate, the way they shift from one object of focus to another. You can actually see another world in there. Sometimes, doing this scares me. Because it shows me how different people are in the inside than what they try to show on the outside. So the next time you happen to pass by me, get to know me more.. Look into my eyes..

“Shining, shimmering, splendid…”, this is a famous line from the song: ‘A Whole New World’. Okay, to begin with, I got this shot from an Italian restaurant on the mountains of Busay (La Tegola), just 20 minutes away from our house. I couldn’t help but say to myself, “hey, this is my world, I can’t believe it can be this beautiful.” This is a shot of Cebu City,Mandaue City, and Mactan including the two bridges.

Photography is so much more than just taking pretty pictures and getting praises from people. It is much more than just keeping still a moment of forever. For me, in the case of this picture, it is showing you my world. In photography, I can show you my world.
