The Art of Photography: A Talk by Ronald N. Eullaran M.D.

Doc Photographer

Last February 26, 2009 Thursday, my dad told me his fellow doctor friends were having this all men only talk on photography in Springdale School AV room. My dad isn’t really much into photography. However, it was his complete initiative to tell me to join in this talk, and I was very excited since this is the first time I’ve ever joined a talk in Photography.

The speaker was Dr. Ronald N. Eullaran, a doctor who specializes in Rheumatology and who does photography for fun. He was able to do a shoot for the famous women of the Philippines in a certain Calendar. He also won in UNILAB’s Photography contest (which was strictly for doctors only) and part of his introduction, he shared that he is no professional photographer and he has never attended any class in photography. His main camera is a Canon G10 (oh yeah! Go canon!!)

Contrary to what the audience was expecting, Dr. Eullaran was giving a talk on the Art of Photography instead of Photography 101. Nevertheless, he still was able to give the group a few tips of what to do when shooting.

The talk about different techniques on shooting was basically a refresh of what I’ve already read in books and articles over the net. But what caught my attention most was the different quotable quotes of Dr. Eullaran.

“Photography is a really simple statement, the clearer it is the better.”

As part of his talk, he mentioned that the design of the picture, the primary determinant of the outcome of the picture, is on how you position your camera. Simple movements can change the perspective of the image. He also shared that using telephoto lenses result in a flat image, while ultra wide lenses give out a 3D effect.

One of my favorite quotes in the talk was:
“In photography, you first know the rules, then you break these rules…”

One kind of concept in photography which breaks these rules is street photography. In street photography you break the rule of thirds, the arranging of elements, the positioning and all. You capture the scene as what you see it to be.
“Sometimes, its nice to let chaos reign.” (this guy knows what he’s talking about! yeah!)

But despite the whole break the rule thing, he has own way of things and has his own rules:
1.Get closer to the subject
2.Get Farther away from the subject
3.Use a simple Background
4.Use selective focus
5.Experiment with the subject Placement
6.Create a silhoutte

Doc teaching how to change to RAW settings

“The more you carry your camera, the better you get..”

“The best thing to learn about Photography is simplicity..”

And although it was not really a basic photography 101 session, I felt like I learned a lot, because before you enter the field of techinicalities of photography, one must remember, that Photography is an art. And as it is an art, it must be appreciated. This talk gave me better appreciation of what Photography is about.
